An ECHO Issue:Domestic Exchange Working Wives

Working wives

Gone were the days when husbands are breadwinners. After the widespread campaign for Women's liberation, wives and mothers take on a heavier role in the household scenario. No longer bound to diaper changing and cooking meals, wives as career women, executives, lawyers are increasing in numbers.

Overseas mothers

Desperate times call for desperate measures. With the country's economic crisis inflation, the wife has to find ways to augment the husband's income. Going abroad is almost always the solution easily thought of.

Career Mothers

More wives are having careers outside the home, not only by choice but mostly by necessity. Men and women roles in society has indeed a foothold where men used to dominate. Wives' skills and capabilities extend far beyond the domestic realm into the corporate world.having tough challenge to deal with colleagues who are mostly male in a line of work stereotyped for the stronger sex only.
Another emotional peril for working moms is maternal guilt. It is never easy to convince the children that Mom has to work in order to earn money for the many expenditures at home. Overriding that is the guilt and regret of missing out on the groth and development milestones of the children.

The Brighter Side

Earning money and being financially independent from husband is a happy prospect for a wife. A career woman becomes productive in the sense that she earns money after the many years of school and training she spent for the career she dreamed of having. This working status also allays a mother's fear of whom to turn to when the husband, the sole breadwinner, gets sick, or worse, dies unexpectedly.

For some women, having a career has everything to do with self-esteem. There are those who thought of marriage as a never ending paradise, which, of course, is not. After having kids and playing housewife for a number of years, a feeling of discontent arises. The answer to this would be finding a suitable outlet for the boredom as an outlet that is profitable.

Some stay at home wives, when asked about their occupation, would turn red in embarrassment and mutter, Plain housewife. Being a housewife is no mean feat, obcourse, but the concept is that it is unpaid work. Being a working mom has its drawbacks as well as advantages. whatever a wife decides, as long as she can strike a balance between work and home, she is a good mother.
