US Flu Victims may be Infecting others

The swine flu epidemic crossed new borders with the first cases confirmed in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, as world health officials said they suspect American patients may have transmitted the virus to others in the U.S.

Most people confirmed with the new swine flu were infected in Mexico, where the number of deaths blamed on the virus has surpassed 150.

But confirmation that people have been infecting others in locations outside Mexico would indicate that the disease was spreading beyond travelers returning from Mexico. The source of some infections in the United States, Canada and Britain was unclear.

The swine flu has already spread to at least six countries besides Mexico, prompting WHO to raise its alert level but not call for travel bans or border closings. Countries, including Canada, Israel and France, warned their citizens to avoid nonessential travel to Mexico.

World Health Organization is advising countries to provide sick people with treatments such as Tamiflu, and make sure national plans are in place to ease the impact of a larger outbreak.

WHO raised the alert level to Phase 4, meaning there is sustained human-to-human transmission causing outbreaks in at least one country. WHO's pandemic alert system was revised after bird flu in Asia began to spread in 2004 and it was the first time it has ever been raised above Phase 3.

Flu deaths are nothing new in the United States or elsewhere. The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 36,000 people died of flu-related causes each year, on average, during the 1990s in the United States. But the new flu strain is a combination of pig, bird and human viruses that humans may have no natural immunity too.

Peñalosa was Knockout by Lopez

Gerry Peñalosa's bid to win his third world championship was stopped as he lost to Juan Manuel Lopez in a TKO.

Peñalosa attempted to dethrone Lopez in a WBO superbantamweight title bout at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico earlier today. However, Peñalosa relinquished his WBO bantamweight crown to challenge Lopez who was making the third defense of the throne he took from Daniel Ponce de Leon on a first round knockout last year. Peñalosa was previously the WBC superflyweight titleholder.

Lopez had scored first round knockouts in his last three outings, demolishing Ponce de Leon, Cesar Figueroa and Sergio Medina in that order, to raise his record to 24-0, with 22 KOs. He was only five years old when Peñalosa turned pro in 1989.

But Peñalosa wasn’t fazed by Lopez’ reputation and youth. With trainer Freddie Roach in his corner, Peñalosa was convinced he could bring down Lopez. However, Peñalosa's camp stopped the fight between the ninth and tenth rounds.

T2, Must-see Summer Movie

Much-awaited by horror movie fans is the Star Cinema’s latest offering “T2,” dubbed the official “must-see” summer movie of 2009, and which opens today, Black Saturday, in over 100 theaters nationwide. Why show it on Black Saturday? Because it is recalled that in the past, all of Star Cinema movies shown on Black Saturday have all been box-office hits. And this is also expected of “T2,” to be another huge success for Star Cinema.

“T2” stars Diamond Star Maricel Soriano who reunites with box-office director Chito Roño who was responsible for the two previous Star Cinema horror blockbusters “Feng Shui” (starring Kris Aquino) and “Sukob” (starring Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto).

The trailer alone of “T2” (from which “psst…” has become the official scary byword) has excited countless televiewers who certainly wouldn’t miss watching the horror flick on the big screen, if only to see what stuff this movie is made of. With engkantos taken to the fore in this film, moviegoers will definitely witness a world never before seen in a movie.

With “T2,” the bankable triumvirate Star Cinema, Chito Roño and Maricel Soriano promise to take moviegoers on the edge of their seats. The rigorous shooting schedules and grueling special effects processes have produced a film that is expected to be long remembered as one of the best horror films this decade.

Because this is not just a horror movie, they say. It is a film that infuses drama and heart to the story, elements that will be much appreciated by Kapamilya audiences here and all over the world.

By the way, “T2” boasts of an impressive cast, meticulously assembled for this project: new child wonder Mika dela Cruz, who Maricel and Direk Chito have been praising to high heavens for being so talented and promising; Derek Ramsay who plays Maricel’s husband; Eric Fructuoso who plays her driver, comebacking Camille Prats, K Brosas in her first serious film, and Tetchie Agbayani who returns to mainstream cinema via “T2.”

“T2’s” international screening schedule is as follows: April 17-23, at the Micronesia Mall in Guam; UA Stonestown Twin in San Francisco; Regal Village Square Stadium in Las Vegas; Parkway Plaza Stadium Cinema in Seattle; Cerritos Stadium Cinema in Los Angeles; and UA Horton Plaza in San Deigo; April 30-May 2 at Al Ghurair in Dubai and Grand Megamall in Sharjah; May 7-9 at the Grand Al Mariah in Abu Dhabi; May 8-14 at Coliseum Scarborough in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada; and Empire Studio 10 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; May 14-16, at Grand Cine Center in Qatar and Seed Cineplex in Bahrain.

“T2” has been rated B by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

Golden Boy' Oscar De La Hoya quits boxing at 36

Oscar De La Hoya knew it was time to retire after Manny Pacquiao pummeled him into submission in December. Still, he wavered another four months before persuading himself to let go.

De La Hoya ended a 16-year career in which he won 10 world titles in six divisions and became boxing's most popular fighter.

"These four months have been very difficult for me," the 36-year-old native of East Los Angeles told hundreds of fans gathered Tuesday at an outdoor plaza across from Staples Center.
"This decision was based on making sure, first of all, that I do not disappoint anyone when I step inside the ring, that I don't disappoint myself, and I make sure that I can watch my kids grow up."

De La Hoya was thoroughly beaten by Pacquiao in his last fight, his fourth loss in his last seven bouts. He had not defeated a formidable opponent since Fernando Vargas in 2002. Age and diminished skills led to losses in recent years to Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He won his last title in May 2006, beating Ricardo Mayorga in six rounds for the WBC 154-pound belt. He finished with a record of 39-6 and 30 knockouts.
